Respite Care at Christmas
The festive period is known by many for its glad tidings, great food and much merriment. However, for some the option to relax just isn’t there. Caring for loved ones is rewarding, but can be demanding. During Christmas time it’s essential that as a carer you take some much-earned time to look after your own wellbeing – which is where respite care comes in.
Whether you need a few hours to do Christmas shopping and decorate your tree, or you want to spend a few days visiting a relative or friend in another part of the country, you can rely on Friary Care to provide a safe and warm stay that will give you peace of mind.
What is respite care?
Respite care can cover anything from an extra pair of hands round the house to help with the day-to-day tasks, to your loved one spending a short amount of time as a resident in a care home. Taking this time for yourself means that you can recuperate and feel more confident that over the hustle and bustle of Christmas, you’re going to get some time off for yourself too.
Respite care not only benefits the carer and but those being cared for. If they’re going on an extended care break or stay, it’s an opportunity to meet new people, see different places and take part in Christmas activities without having to compromise on their schedule. We know that routine is key, so with a personal plan in place for each resident, we can make sure their stay is as wonderful as possible.
Why is respite care important over Christmas?
With so much to do over Christmas it’s easy to feel that you’re becoming snowed under – but when caring for someone, that feeling can be magnified and leave you feeling quite lonely. Respite care allows you to take some time to catch up with friends, family and get things sorted, safe in the knowledge that your loved one is able to keep to their routine and enjoy some new company too.
Having this breather can also help the carer connect with others in a similar position, and forge a new community. We encourage carers to join us for teas and lunches where you can meet other residents’ carers and enjoy some festive food and drink.
Where to find support over Christmas.
At Friary Care in Weymouth we can tailor respite care to suit you. We’ll take the time to find out about you and your loved one before arranging respite care that you’re both happy with – including putting together a detailed personal care plan. Our teams have extensive experience in supporting those with restricted mobility, Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia with around-the-clock care.
During a stay with us, no matter whether it’s simply for a few days or even longer, each client is gently encouraged to join the rest of our residents and take part in the daily festivities – it is the most wonderful time of the year after all.
